PRAGUE (AP)— Slovakia defeated the US 5-4 in overtime at the ice hockey world championship on Monday when Milos Kelemen scored with 1:04 left.
at Group B at Ostrava, Slovak goalkeeper Samuel Hlavaj stopped 39 shots and Libor Hudacek, Simon Nemec, and Patrik Koch scored.
The Americans scored three goals in 12:06 of the third session to force overtime down 4-1.
The Americans' second goal came from Shane Pinto between Hlavaj's pads, Brady Tkachuk scored solo, and Luke Hughes scored with 3:22 left on a snap shot.
Kelemen scored his first goal and Hudacek gave the Slovaks a 2-0 lead in the first quarter.
Simon Nemec scored for Slovakia with a slap shot and Patrik Koch added the fourth goal 8:47 into the frame after Matt Boldy's rebound cut the lead to 2-1
They persuaded John Hynes to replace Alex Nedeljkovic with Trey Augustine.
Nedeljkovic conceded four goals on 16 shots. Augustine saved 8 times.
The US fell 5-2 to Sweden in its opener then won last year's runner-up Germany 6-1.
